This game is on a roll: Tenzi, the dice-rolling game!

tenziDid you know that the odds of rolling ten dice on the same number in one roll is 10,077,697 to 1? That’s the improbable statistic at the heart of the game of Tenzi, one of my top picks for games at Magic Beans.

Tenzi is one of the fastest games I have ever played! The package is so small you can play it anywhere: you can play at home or at a restaurant while waiting for food, or you can even bring it on vacation! What I love about it is that there are so many different ways to play, and it’s so flexible that it’s easy to make up your own variations. The object of Tenzi, in the traditional way to play, is to get all ten of your dice to land on the same number. Seems easy enough, but who can do it the fastest?

To set up, each player gets 10 dice of the same color. One player says “GO!” and the Tenzi frenzy begins. When you have chosen what number you are going for, you put those dice over to the side and keep rolling until all the numbers are the same. The first person to get all ten of the same number yells, “TENZI!”

What is great about this game is that it’s so simple that as long as they know their numbers, even the youngest kids can play (although the game is suggested for 7+). You don’t even have to have a winner, since you all can play “Team Tenzi,” where everyone in the group plays as a team to get all the same numbers. There are so many ways to play!

One of my favorites is called “Stealzi.” The object of this game is the same, but you have to watch what your opponent is rolling, because you can steal the number you are going for if they roll it. Don’t forget to give them one of your die in return! All players must have 10 dice at all times.

My husband’s favorite way to play is called “Tower Tenzi.” Instead of putting your dice to the side once you roll the target number, you have to stack them on top of each other. Watch out, though, because if the tower tumbles, you need to re-roll those dice. You still need to get all the same number, but try stacking tiny dice on top of one another while you are trying to roll a heap of other dice. Dice go everywhere!

These are only a few ways to play but there are so many more! If you make up your own way, let us know! We love finding out new ways to play one of our favorite games. Or stop by any of our stores and we can show you how to play!
