Step 2 Recall – Push Around Buggy and Whisper Ride Buggy

Step 2 has just recalled 2.5 million Push Around Buggy and Whisper Ride Buggy ride-ons. This is a recall to repair, which means that Step 2 has devised a solution that will eliminate the safety hazard, and they will send parents a repair kit at no charge.

What’s the problem?

The yellow pin that holds the parent handle in place can loosen and detach from the buggy, creating a safety hazard. There have been 28 reports of this occurring, 2 of which were serious enough to need medical treatment. The other children sustained minor scrapes and bruises.

If you have one, you should stop using it and contact Step 2 to get a repair kit. You can reach them toll-free at (866) 860-1887 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit www.step2.com.

The recall covers products sold between August 1999 and March 2010, which should mean that our current stock is fine. I will obviously confirm that tomorrow morning. If you aren’t sure whether or not your Buggy is recalled, check on the back where the parent handle is attached. If the pin holding it in place is yellow (as shown here), it is recalled. The biggest challenge with a recall is making sure that all parents who own the product are aware of the recall. This presents an easy opportunity to be a good Samaritan, because the cause of the recall (the yellow pin) is so easy to spot. If you see someone pushing a recalled buggy down the street, stop them and tell them. They’ll thank you for it.
