Primo Viaggio SIP is AOK

Primo Viaggio, AniceUntil 2006, the best-selling Peg Perego Primo Viaggio car seat had a major drawback. It could not be installed in a car without the accompanying base. This may not seem like a big deal, but ask any parent who had to trek through an airport lugging not only an infant car seat, but also the bulky base, and he or she will tell you – it’s a pain in the neck. For taxicabs and unexpected situations, it’s was a huge inconvenience, not to mention a safety hazard, especially in a pinch.

When we started carrying the Peg Perego line, we did not order the car seats. I felt really strongly that we could not recommend them. We gave this feedback to the company (as did many other people, I’m sure), and they responded by redesigning the Primo Viaggio. Not only did they resolve the base problem, but they made some other nice improvements, too.

The new Primo Viaggio SIP (stands for Side Impact Protection) accommodates babies to 22 lbs and 30″. The strap adjusts with one hand, and the seat also clicks in and out of the base using one hand. Clearly, someone took this seat back to the drawing board and really thought about how parents will use it.

The only bad news is for other stroller companies that have reverse-engineered Peg Perego car seat clips in order to create aftermarket travel systems. From what I understand, the new Primo Viaggio is not compatible with current clips from Bugaboo and Mountain Buggy. I’m still waiting to hear about Valco, e3 and others. Hopefully these manufacturers will jump on the ball and get some updated clips out soon, but until then, parents who love these seats but want a more substantial stroller will face a catch 22.
