We just recently welcomed the Maxi Cosi Magellan Max to our lineup, and it’s quite the feature-packed convertible car seat. This 5-in-1 seat can last for 10 years of adventures, and it might be the only one you’ll need in your child’s car seat career.

Our friends from Maxi Cosi visited us at the Magic Beans Headquarters last week to school us on this brand new seat. Though Maxi Cosi is a global brand and the most recognizable car seat brand in Europe, the Magellan Max is actually manufactured in the USA! Their teams in Europe and the USA teamed up to create the Maxi Cosi Magellan Max you see today.

If you’ve already started convertible car seat research, you’ve probably seen a few brands tout the layers of protection in their seats. Maxi Cosi implemented quite a few of these in the Magellan Max, and they all work to absorb energy in the event of a collision.

First, there’s the outer plastic shell. Then, atop that shell is another plastic layer. We noticed that this inner plastic layer is completely solid – we typically see hollow plastic in this portion of the seat. And then Maxi Cosi’s patented Air Protect headrest. When you first squish the head rest, it immediately seems like a comfy neck pillow you’d bring on your next flight – but it’s implemented for safety more than comfort, even though it’s definitely cozy. Air Protect acts like a static air bag that inflates and deflates as it’s squeezed. This is an awesome safety feature that absorbs energy in the event of a side impact collision.

Parents: you’ll be THRILLED to know that the Maxi Cosi Magellan Max is super easy to clean. The soft goods come off easily and can be machine washed and dried. You’ll also love the Magellan Max’s EZ Out Harness System with ClipQuick. This magnetic chest clip slides and self locks when you’re buckling, and it also makes it nearly impossible for your Houdini to unlock the chest clip themselves.

Here’s each stage of the Magellan Max Convertible Car Seat.

1. Deeply reclined rear-facing car seat for an infant
2. More upright rear-facing car seat once their neck muscles have developed
3. Forward-facing convertible car seat
4. High back booster with 5-point harness
5. Belt-positioning booster

And the Magellan Max transforms with every stage. It features a 7-position recline, 3 torso height positions, and 14 headrest heights that automatically raise the harness along with it. The rear-facing weight capacity is 5-50 pounds, forward-facing is 22-65lbs, and booster is 40-120lbs.
