Every once in a long while, a product comes out that challenges everything we thought we knew. With a prototype that was released just days ago, the Kioma Car Seat has made an inevitable ruckus in the baby gear industryfor good reason.

Introducing the Kioma Car Seat. And no, it was not designed exclusively for spacecrafts. The creators of the Kioma have engineered a seat with ZERO moving parts. Kioma believes that where their fixed handle is less convenient, it makes up for it in safety. The rollbar offers additional protection in vehicle accidents as well as non-vehicle accidents like caregiver falls and drops from raised surfaces. Less movable parts mean less opportunities for mechanical and user failure. And the rounded bottom lets you rock baby blissfully to sleep.

Made of durable carbon fiber, this seat weighs in at just 5.5 pounds. Kioma believes that lighter is better when it comes to car seats, and they have the research to prove it. By reducing the mass of a seat, they “reduce the amount of force applied to a child in the acceleration of a collision.” Kioma can’t change the speed at which you’re driving in a collision. What they can change is this force through reducing the weight of their seat.

You won’t find a prototype for a Kioma base just yet. But if there’s no base yet, how could it possibly be deemed as safe? To serve a busy and urban lifestyle, the Kioma is able to be installed with just a standard lap belt. Kioma stands by their commitment to superior safety and transparency in keeping you informed. They own their own test lab, and conduct testing in both third party and independent accredited labs. They’ve exceeded safety standards in both arenas.

The Kioma is expected to release late 2017. The price point is subject to change, but currently the car seat will range from $1,000-$2,500. Kioma assures that you won’t be paying a pretty penny just for style. Rather, you’re paying for superior safety that’s proudly manufactured in the United States.
