Dramatic Safety Lesson on YouTube

YouTubeKyle David Miller was just 3 years old when he was killed in a car accident in May of 2005. He was buckled into a belt-positioning booster seat, but his seatbelt failed and he was ejected from the car. His parents learned a painful lesson in car seat safety, and they have created a beautiful, poignant and powerful video designed to educate other parents about the importance of a 5-point harness for older children.

With over 800,000 views on YouTube since it was posted two weeks ago, and almost 200,000 in the past 24 hours alone, parents all over the world are getting the message. The video names the Britax Regent as a good alternative, and as a result, Britax is sold out of Regent seats until 2007 (we’ve still got a few left). Another good option is the new Radian 80 from Sunshine Kids, due to arrive this week. This seat is the first on the market that will accommodate a child from newborn to 80 lbs. in a 5-point harness.

After seeing this video, I will be moving my 4-year old into a Radian 80. This family endured a terrible tragedy, and if they’ve made it their mission to educate parents, I’m very grateful to learn from their experience.

Be aware that the video is extremely sad; find a time to watch it when you can curl up with some tissues. If you don’t think you can handle it, there are three key points: seatbelts are not failsafe, a 5-point harness is the best way to secure a child in a car, and the top tether is a must since it provides a second line of defense should the seatbelt or LATCH connectors fail.
