The “do” date

Today is my due date. The little countdown application on my Facebook page says “0 days remaining.” And even though I’ve already been through this twice before, already gone beyond two due dates in the past, I can’t help feeling a bit stood up. Of course I get it – it’s just a date, it’s totally arbitrary, and in fact my earliest ultrasound showed that it was very likely a week too early. But still. For all these months, I’ve been committed to July 24th. People ask when I’m due, and the answer has always been July 24th. After a while, even though I knew it was unwise, I believed in July 24th. Now that it’s come and gone, I am a little lost. When is this baby coming? Well, obviously not July 24th. So I’m faced with the reality that I really just don’t know. He’ll come when he’s ready. He’ll come when the time is right. Or he’ll come when and if my OB gets tired of waiting. But he won’t come when I say so, and that’s just annoying. And yet, when I think about it, it’s probably good practice for toddlerhood…

If anyone has found a good trick to expedite labor, please let me know.
