The best travel strollers: BabyZen, UPPAbaby, Baby Jogger & more!
Are you finishing off your summer with a trip away from home? Whether you’re taking a new arrival to meet her grandparents for the first time, or taking your little guy on his first trip to Disneyland, these lightweight and compact travel strollers make it easier to get out and show your kids the world!
BabyZen YoYo+ Stroller Complete, $720 (or order minus the Newborn Pack as the YoYo+ 6+ for $495)
If you’re going to be doing a lot of flying with your kid, it is absolutely worth investing in this sleek, travel-optimized stroller – few travel strollers have such a perfect combination of a compact fold and a great push for everyday use. The marquee feature, as we’ve pointed out many times before, is the teeny-tiny fold: the BabyZen YoYo+ folds up small enough to fit in the overhead compartment on a plane, meaning that you can step right off the plane, unfold your YoYo, and get rolling!
Because it’s so petite, the YoYo is also terrific for mass transit and cars – there’s no trunk too small! – but it also provides a nice smooth one-handed push and handles remarkably well despite small wheels. And, even newborns can ride: you can buy the Complete version with a cozy bassinet-like Newborn Pack, or snap on your Cybex, Nuna, or Maxi-Cosi infant car seat with the infant car seat adapters.

Baby Jogger City Tour Stroller, $199.99
The City Tour shares the YoYo’s key feature – it also has an ultra-compact fold that lets it ride on the plane with you! It also shares the straight-across handlebar that allows for one-handed pushing, and comes with a really great travel bag. Maclaren Quest Umbrella Stroller, $300
The Quest loads a lot of comfort and convenience features into a super petite package: it weighs only 12.3 pounds, but it can adapt for even new babies to ride! The seat reclines fully, and the “Newborn Safety System” uses a protective head and foot barrier to cozily cradle your tiny tot. The cozy fabrics, updated for 2016, provide a comfortable ride for your child, and Maclaren expanded all of the sun canopies on their strollers so they now have a drop-down sun visor and extra zip-out panel, providing plenty of coverage.
Maclaren strollers are prized for their sturdiness: we love them because they can take years of heavy use and keep on going. As Diana from Magic Beans Brookline wrote earlier this year, “Maclaren’s function and design is top shelf, single malt. Aside from the BabyZen YoYo, a Maclaren is the lightweight stroller that’s least likely to rust, least likely to snap parts off, and least likely to make squeaking noises, and definitely the easiest to clean.”
UPPAbaby G-Luxe Umbrella Stroller, $259.99
Finally: the G-Luxe is a longtime favorite of Magic Beans customers, known for a durable feel and tons of comfort features, including cozy fabrics and a nice deep recline. It also has a standing fold, which can really make or break your experience – you don’t have to bend over and pick it up to load it into your car! Ultimately, the best way to choose a lightweight stroller for your travels is to drop by our stores and try them all out! Our stroller matchmakers are always happy to help you evaluate your needs to find the right fit for your family.
