Romina is a tentpole for us here at Magic Beans, an example of the best kinds of companies. We believe that quality furniture (along with a quality mattress!) is one of the absolute most important things you can get for baby. But we’re also practical, and know that buying furniture tons of time over a child’s adolescence isn’t great for the environment, nor a lot of fun for anyone involved. Romina aims to be your first and last furniture investment
With Romina’s smart conversion kits for their cribs, as well as dressers built to withstand a lifetime, they truly deliver on that goal. Romina’s aims are to be sustainable, safe, and sturdy. If you’ve watched our Youtube Channel recently, you’ll see their Imperio Crib and Dresser behind Eli in most of the videos. We want to give you a little background on Romina and what makes them unique in the furniture world.
Romina is a European brand that started in Romania circa 1991, and remains one of the few furniture companies that actually produces their furniture in Europe. They exclusively used sustainably harvested beechwood, creating hardwood furniture that lasts a lifetime. Beechwood is a durable, solid wood that is known for strength and ability to withstand many climates. Not only that, but they plant 5 Beech trees for everyone harvested.
If you dig into the most commonly used materials amongst catalog furniture companies in the US, you’ll find lots of composite and pine furniture. The former is already infamous for its harmful chemicals and that it is essentially just wood chips and glue. The latter is a wood in good standing with most, but soft enough that it can warp, bend or be gnawed on by kiddo’s growing chompers over time. Beechwood retains its strength through decades of use, rarely giving way to dents or scratches.
Their dressers are a work of art. Romina knows how it feels to have a dresser for just a little bit too long, where the drawers start to wiggle out of place, get stuck, or start to buckle under the pressure of what they’ve been holding for years. So they designed a drawer that won’t buckle under the pressure of decades of use. Glides and hinges are made of zinc-plated, anti-corrosive steel that is permanently lubricated and load reinforced. These systems are equipped with a hydraulic soft-closing mechanism, full extension, anti-detachment, and adjustment features. All of this may sound like fancy buzzwords, but the hardware, combined with the English dovetail design, creates drawers certified to withstand for 80,000 uses (roughly 70 years of use!) and able to hold 66 lbs! Check out the video above to see Eli casually putting his full body weight on the drawer to test its strength!
Their cribs are designed for a lifetime, with 4-in-1 conversion capability. There are many stages kids go through between a crib and a full size bed, so Romina makes a point to address all of them. These options convert from a crib to a daybed, to a toddler bed, to a full size bed (with headboard!), covering every stage of kiddo’s growth.
Since your child, or possibly multiple of your children, will be using their beds through their adolescence and beyond, you want to make sure that the materials these beds are constructed from won’t degrade and were not made with unnecessary chemicals that can be harmful to your child during the years they’re most susceptible to harmful chemicals. Romina understands how important this is and goes through pains to ensure that their entire range of furniture is GreenGuard Certified, ensuring that no harmful or excess chemicals were used in the manufacturing process. Unlike much of the furniture world, Romina’s products do not need to be “off-gassed” before you put your baby in them because of their commitment to clean manufacturing. For those few children that attempt to sink their baby teeth into the wood of the crib, Romina takes every precaution by using only water-based, low VOC paints and organic oil-based wood stains.
With all of the precautions Romina has taken in creating some of the safest cribs out there, they also offer tons of aesthetic options to choose from. Traditional to modern, colorful to muted, they offer over 8 different collections and 17 different finishes to choose from. The Convertible cribs have their own options of customizing the backboard as well.
