Nursery themes, nursery savings: A nursery design for Tax-Free Weekend
Tax Free Weekend is coming up on August 10-11, and it’s the perfect time to do some serious buying for baby. 6.25% sales tax may not sound like much, but it can really stack up when you’re, say, furnishing your nursery. In this blog, we came up with a basic nursery design, and we’ll demonstrate how much you can save on an entire nursery design if you shop this weekend!
For our nursery design, we did some poking around for inspiration, and happened upon this slide show from Vanity Fair, which shows a myriad of design ideas, most of which are, admittedly, a little frilly for our tastes. As you’ve probably noticed, Magic Beans leans towards clean and modern designs, like the surprisingly modern 1908 nursery in the second slide – not only do we like the look, but clean design is so practical! It’s easier to keep everything from getting dusty (not something you really want to have to worry about when you’ve got a baby to tend to), and besides, look at all that ruffly, thick, cushy bedding in the other slides! It’s not at all safe by modern standards.
So when we picked out the elements for this potential nursery design, we went simple, clean, and natural (and of course, safe). The mobile, bookcase, and rug create an understated forest/nature theme, and we’re thinking dark blue walls with white elements would work out nicely.
We went with the Stokke Sleepi System Crib and Bassinet. The wee circular bassinet is lovely, simple, and portable: it rolls on nice quiet lockable casters, so you can keep it in your room for close supervision while you sleep, and roll it into the nursery for daytime naps. When baby is sitting up, it’s easy to transform your bassinet into the full-sized Sleepi Crib, an elegant oval crib that’s a terrific centerpiece for your nursery.
We finished the crib off with the Stokke Sleepi Naturalmat Organic Mattress Set, which includes two all-organic mattresses stuffed with coconut coir, Stokke Sleepi Wonder Bumpers, and an Aden & Anais Muslin Crib Sheet. Here’s how it totals out:
The crib: $999.99 ($62 tax)
Mattress set: $629.99 ($39 tax)
Bumper set: $279.99 ($17 tax)
Crib sheet: $39.99 ($3 tax)
TOTAL TAX SAVINGS: $121
That’s enough to buy a Maclaren Volo Stroller!
For storage, changing, and nursing
Lots of dressers and changers in our selection harmonize nicely with the Stokke Sleepi – a DucDuc Alex Dresser/Changer, a Bloom Alma Dresser, or a Babyletto Modo Dresser/Changer would all look great. However, we decided to go with the Stokke Dresser and the Stokke Care Changing Table: we’re going matchy-matchy, and besides, no other changing table has an adjustable height to comfortably suit different caregivers (I’m short myself, so I think about these things).
For the nursing chair, we selected the Monte Design Joya Rocker: the big rocking base harmonizes nicely with the curved shapes of the crib and bassinet. And these custom-made Canadian nursing chairs are second to none. Have you sat in one yet? Come to one of our stores and try one out. We promise you’ll like it.
Here’s how it totals out:
The dresser: $749.99 ($47 tax)
The changing table: $499.99 ($31 tax)
The rocking chair: $895 ($56 tax)
TOTAL TAX SAVINGS: $134
That’s enough to buy an Ergo Baby Organic Carrier!
Accessories and decoration

Boon Glo Nightlight: $79.99 ($5 tax)

Haba Meadow Rug: $199.99 ($13 tax)
