Heavy Duty
Apparently, Cybex is getting into the baby market. Last year, the fitness company introduced a revolutionary new high-back booster seat at this show and won the coveted innovation award. This year, they’ve brought out a fascinating new convertible car seat, and won it again. When we visited, we met JB, the VP of Sales for this division of Cybex, and he was all smiles. The seat is interesting. It sort of reminded me of the car seat that won America’s Best Invention, but it’s not an infant seat, per se. The seat installs once, and then can swivel to face forward or rear, depending on the age of the child. The seat can be rotated to face the parent when strapping in the child, like the Orbit, and it can also recline. To assuage boredom in rear-facing kids, they’ve added a built-in DVD player.
It’s a really interesting concept, and I’m excited to see where it goes. My chief concern is that the DVD player is out of commission once the child is forward-facing, and that’s the age when you really need some entertainment for long car trips. But maybe they’ve got a plan for that.
The booster from last year is cool, too. It has a very unique head rest design that allows the child’s head to recline back slightly for comfortable and safe sleeping, but in case of a collision, it will automatically snap into an upright position to better absorb the impact of the crash.
They were also showing a bicycle with no handlebars. I’m not sure why, since it’s not really a baby product, but it was definitely keeping the adults entertained.
