Flash of Brilliance
I’ve never been a huge fan of flash cards. I can remember receiving them as a kid, and feeling a bit like I’d just been given a lump of coal (or whatever the Jewish equivalent… a stale bagel?). But a lot of parents ask for them, and so I set off to find some really good ones.
When I first found Flash of Brilliance, I was smitten with their company name (in a previous job, I used to name products, and I still get excited about good, clever names). Then, I realized that their flash cards are really something special. They’re thick and heavy, like pages of a board book, and the photography is excellent. The facts on the reverse of each card range from basic to very, very in-depth (occasionally bordering on absurd for very little kids) but that just guarantees that these cards will be appealing across a wide age range — and parents will learn a few things, too. The simpler ABC and Animal decks are appropriate for children 3 months and up, while the more scientific-oriented decks on Space, Bugs and Dinosaurs are for 3 years and up.
