Counting on it?
New from Winning Moves, Beat the Count is a simple yet addictive new card game that leverages both luck and skill on the path to victory. Players flip their cards over into a central discard pile, and count aloud the number of cards they have played, starting at 1 on each turn. Each card is numbered from 1-10, and as long as the number on the card doesn’t match the number of cards that have been played, the player is safe, and can choose to dump up to 10 cards in a turn. But if the numbers do match, the player has to take the whole pile. So each player employes strategy, probability, and yes, some dumb luck, to try and be the first to get rid of all his/her cards. There are some action cards that spice things up a bit, but it’s very straightforward. I played this game at Toy Fair, and I wasn’t expecting to be impressed – it almost seemed too simplistic – but I actually liked it a lot. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
